Michael Brook w/ Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois: Hybrid

MICHAEL BROOK W/ BRIAN ENO AND DANIEL LANOIS - HYBRID

EG Records 1985

SIDE ONE:
Hybrid
Distant Village
Mimosa
Pond Life
SIDE TWO:
Ocean Motion
Midday
Earth Floor
Vacant

(the rip is broken into two side-long tracks, as that is how i would listen to it anyway, and i'm lazy)

Michael Brook has kinda gone un-noticed for the last few decades. Best known these days for his soundtrack work for movies like Inconvenient Truth and Into the Wild, dude was at one point a deeper drifter tripper. This record, recorded in 1985 with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, is a perfect slow burner for a rainy winter afternoon. Sometimes i set side two on repeat on my record player and just drift away for hours. Michael Brook invented the Infinite Guitar, basically a pick up that acts as individual e-bows for each string. Here he throws that through a bunch of awesome 80's harmonizers and other effects, lets Eno and Lanois come up with some deeply drifted and tucked low-bit electro-afro beats, and lays it out slow and mellow. The guitar sounds like some sort of snake-flute languorously slithering atop the bed of a gradually shifting mauve and crimson sunset.

From Brook's website:
While still administering the artist-access studio Charles St. Video in his native Toronto, Michael helped Brian Eno prepare a series of environmental video-based installations, which the two subsequently installed in art museums around the world. Messrs.Brook & Eno would, on occasion, play in tandem with the video shows. In return for Michael’s technological expertise, Brian offered to help with the solo recordings that would yield Hybrid.

Sessions begun in Michael’s basement 8-track studio (The Crypt, located in Toronto’s Chinatown) migrated to 24-tracks within Daniel Lanois’ Grant Avenue facility in nearby Hamilton. Michael was well familiar with the Lanois studio, having recorded there previously with Jon Hassell, as well as for the sessions that produced Eno’s On Land. Lanois also ended up playing on Hybrid. Michael recalls the Hybrid sessions as a ‘thrilling time that involved much banging of my head against the wall,’ this being his first attempt at working in a proper studio, ‘having access to the sort of signal processing that people now have in their Palm Pilots.’ It was also the premier manifestation of what would become Michael’s sonic thumbprint: spiraling, Indian-inflected melodies articulated by his invention, the Infinite Guitar.

THIS RECORD IS STILL IN PRINT ON CD. MAYBE IF YOU LOVE IT BUY IT HERE

And you can make friends with Michael Brook here.

You can get an Infinite Guitar like device, called the Sustainer, from Fernandez Guitars. They even have a video section dedicated to it.
Or or there's also the ''original" mass-produced pickup mounted magnetic sustain device: The Sustainiac "Intense, predictable, infinite feedback sustain for guitars and other stringed instruments"........... or you could just get an E-Bow. or maybe you could try and build The Gizmo like 10cc...

WHATEVER IT IS YOU DO, DRONE ON IT.

Frank Perry - New Atlantis

FRANK PERRY - NEW ATLANTIS

Temple of Sound
Rays of Sunlight touch the Healing Waters

another shimmering set of chiming gongs and bells loveliness from frank perry. some deep zones for the holidays. enjoy!

“Bells and gongs are representative of some of the most spiritual music,” says Perry. He is a master of his art form, understanding how each gong produces its fundamental tone, harmonics and sub-tones. He carefully blends to create the specific meditative mood he desires. “Admittedly, percussion is not a field of instrumentation or sound-source most usually associated with meditational music, but I have spent half of my life refining the potential usages and overcoming the initial restrictions imposed by this musical medium of percussion.”

Steven Halpern - "I" A Cosmic Attunement

STEVEN HALPERN - "I" A COSMIC ATTUNEMENT

sri records 771

1977

first installment by sonic incense creator steven halpern. this is not my favorite halpern album, but its a good one. side A is an astrological suite, each track based on each sign of the zodiac. typical lovely electric piano drippings from halpern with some synth and chimes, etc. side B gets into some different zones. some bad acoustic piano and violin is relieved by harp bliss and more electric piano mellow noodlings. enjoy!

Ariel Kalma - Music for Dream and Love

ARIEL KALMA - MUSIC FOR DREAM AND LOVE
1979

came across more sweet zones by ariel kalma. after having heard his album 'osmose' awhile back and sleeping on it a bit, i delved deeper into his discography and found this gem. deep meditative bliss. phased farfisa like synth, echoed distorted flute blankets, cosmic vocal incantations, ocean waves, distant filtered drums, etc. more kalma karmic bliss to come......

for optimum vibrational enjoyment, please listen to this record while sitting shirtless in the lotus position on the beach near the ocean (preferrably while wearing comfortable white pants).

"In his room under the roof in his Paris' apartment, Ariel had a music set-up playing for days and nights while he carefully tuned his voice with sound layers, echoes, drum machines... he would often enter a meditative state. Music for Dream and Love was recorded in 1979, on two occasions when Ariel remembered to press Record before embarking on his musical meditation."

Peter Davison - Selamat Siang - Music on the Way...

PETER DAVISON - SELAMAT SIANG - MUSIC ON THE WAY...
avocado records AR-101
1980

here is a really lovely flute / synth / saxophone / harp / cello / guitar record. dreamy floaty episodic soundscapes. synths emulating birds and ocean waves. deep early 80's santa monica vibes here. it seems that peter is now a composer for TV / film, also scoring lots of music for gaiam yoga DVDs. he's tight with rodney yee. there is hardly a mention of this album on his website...but it looks like he made more albums in the early 80's. enjoy this one!

Michael Vetter - Tambura Meditations

MICHAEL VETTER - TAMBURA MEDITATIONS
wergo-spectrum
1983

heavy heavy solo tambura trip by michael vetter.
if you didnt think that tambura could be played as a solo instrument, here is proof otherwise.
vetter coaxes an array of spectral overtones and harmonics from the tambura. track 1 being a little freer and sparser. track 2 has a repetitive minimalist rhythm to it. deeply ZONED!

Steve Roach - Structures From Silence

STEVE ROACH - STRUCTURES FROM SILENCE
Atlantic
1984

getting into blissed out 1980's new age territory here, this is a lovely record of ambient synths and repetitive lush melodies. probably steve roach's best moment as he has seemed to wander into pretty awful southwestern confused native american / aborigine tribal techno burning man music as of late. im particularly fond of the 28+ minute title track, which sounds like something aphex twin blatantly ripped off for his selected ambient works. i hope you can travel there with me, ENJOY!

GO TO THE IASOS COLOR CHAMBER("If you are exposed to all the pure color frequencies, your energy fields instinctively automatically absorb those color frequencies that you are specifically lacking or needing. Iasos - Inter-Dimensional Music Through Iasos

IASOS - INTER-DIMENSIONAL MUSIC
Unity Records (UR700)
1975

had to pull out the big VIBES since this blog was mentioned on a deerhunter blog post (thanks for the props!) which was subsequently mentioned on pitchfork (hello new visitors!)...

this is the first installment by Iasos with his record from 1975 called "Inter-dimensional Music Through Iasos" which is one of the earliest new age records i know of. this is a rip of my LP, iasos does sell a cdr of this album on his website but it sounds like a bad LP transfer. and the great EM label from japan has also reissued this album on cd, but i still think my LP rip sounds better. i hope the pictures above capture the cool gold embossed text on the covers.
this album is full of cascading, bubbling prisms of sound with a jazzy splash on a few tracks. the back cover is chock full of great new age quotes.

my favorite being the directions for "Finger-Listening":
"try this: while playing this record, rest your fingers lightly on top of the grill of your speakers (not actually on the paper cone). you can thereby absorb these musical vibrations through your finger-tips as well as through your ears. this can be useful for both charging and sensitizing your hands. for "stereo finger-listening", use one hand per speaker."

and be sure to head over to the cosmic celestial oasis that is Iasos' website here - http://www.iasos.com

ENVIRONMENTS vol. 5-8

ENVIRONMENTS vol. 5-8!!!!!!

Classic! Just classic...These records litter every used record store and thrift store in the world, it seems. Honey has been bringing them home from the bins for a while now and we've amassed quite a collection. Mostly they just sit in a neat stack on the record shelf, but every once in a while they can really hit the spot. This one "Disc 7: Intonation/Summer Cornfield" is all deep vocal chanting on side one....total deep meditation drone ahh vibes of the highest order for 30 minutes.......and a killer sound-world of buzzing bugs and natural world drones on side two.
The Environments series of LPs predate all the crappy ocean waves + midi synth CDs of the 80's 90's and today - of which there are literally millions - and these records surpass all that sappy crappy poop music in all ways. Totally focused on tripping you mellow with an almost modernist, minimalist, scientific aesthetic mixed with just the perfect touch of 70's gauze effects...Just..tasty. Accept no imitations!

Instead of trying to sell you on these things any further, why don't i just let the people at Syntonic Research Inc., who produced these classics in proto-new age do the talking:

"´ Environments™ are based on proprietary psychoacoustic research. They are not like repetitive –sound machines.” Environments™ are incredibly real sounding -- even using earphones or an inexpensive boom box. No one whispers hidden messages in your ear. You can use EnvironmentsÈ effectively and easily for just about any activity (except disco dancing). They are neither casual nature recordings nor mere –sound experience” compilations.

« You'll probably never get tired of hearing them.

« Environments™ superb realism lets them work for you in ways all imitators and costly electronic devices cannot.

Environments™ literally convince your mind you are where you want to be.

« Environments™ are perhaps the most useful sounds ever put on tape or CD. They can be safely and easily used for relaxation, meditation, alpha inducement, self-hypnosis, concentration, sex and virtually any activity needing nonmusical sound. This renowned, carefully acquired natural music of our planet has inspired many imitators.

« The Environments™ Series are what the fuss has always been about.

« This Series has been glowingly commented upon by almost every major media source, including Newsweek, The New York Times, AP, NBC, ABC, CBS, NET, BBC & CBC. NASA even placed Environments™ aboard Voyager to help accurately represent earth's sounds to alien creatures. Millions of people worldwide use these recordings daily."

Syntonic Research Inc is STILL AROUND. their website is a bit crunk, but it says you can order 16 varieties of tapes, and three different CDs. Intonations/Summer Cornfield has not been re-issued on CD...

or this other page, which is not linked to the first

Also check out what they have to say about the series over at Julian Cope's Head Heritage

*please note, my copy is slightly warped and crackly. i actually kind of like it like that. i hope you do too.

GIMMER NICHOLSON - CHRISTOPHER IDYLLS

GIMMER NICHOLSON - CHRISTOPHER IDYLLS
lucky 7 records cd9204
recorded 1968

my buddy pete turned me on to this record recently. really lovely multitracked acoustic guitar instrumentals with some effects and things by SF hippie gimmer nicholson. if you like solo guitar music, this is a treasure and a treat. its not like fahey or basho, etc. it has its own thing going on. definitely new age way before new age was even conceived. i still cant believe this music was recorded in 1968. recorded at ardent studios and produced by terry manning who went on to work with power pop sensations, big star.

this record is like honey dripping into chamomile tea or a tall glass of pear nectar or sunlight filtering through a pine tree.
enJOY it!

city indigo - "a tone poem for bass flute...based on the fundamental and harmonic overtones of the gong"

Texas minimal/meditation/electronic musician JD Emmanuel's Rain Forest Music LP, originally released in 1981, is available for free from his own website... which is truly a site to behold. There are so many other awesome recordings offered for free download.
